Velvet skirt

Together with my doublet and my petticoat I am of course supposed to wear a skirt

As I wanted to make a skirt to my doublet, but at the same time be neutral, so that I can wear it together with other things. I choose to make it in grey velvet, just as the doublet. Besides being lazy I am a little bit stingy!! So I thought this way. If you turn velvet, it will show, because the threads in the cloth will shine different. So it will look as if you have two different pieces of cloth. That means that you have to buy much cloth because you have to cut it in the same direction.

Then I said to myself, why not make every second gore up side down? As a result it will look as if I did it on purpose. And if I sew a tiny long piece of velvet between the gores, it will most probably look as if I made it on purpose right from the beginning.

The mesurement for 8 gores is easy. Take the vaist mesurement, split it in half. Then you have the mesurement for the back and for the front. Now take the half and split into 4. You have to mark the gores wichone is up and wichone is down ( the hreads in the velvet) The reason why the gores are not made straight on both sides is because I didn`t know were I was going to have the opening for the skirt. So I simply cut all gores the same way. That way this will not be a problem in the end, I can choose any gore. (The opening in the skirt needs some extra cloth.)

Between every gore ther is a tiny string of velvet. Start to cut out long strings of velvet on the bias. Put 2 pieces wrapped over, and cut, pin them, then sew them togetherFold them and irron

Just as the picture shows they are pinned together and sewed in a shape as a V, but the final result will be a long velvet string

Sorry but the picture is a little bit blurred, but it is better than nothing. It showes how the thin velvet piece is laid between the gores, and sewed into the hem
The vaistband is first sewed from the front side and then by hand from the back side

This is my doughter that just had to be my model for the picture of the final result.

She had to put on chemise, petticoat, doublet, bonnet and the new skirt.

(Ok the dress is a bit oversized for her, but just as I mentioned before better this picture than nothing. At least you get a grip of the result, and that is the idea.)

So what happened to the stingy part of making this skirt???

It came out nicely! The skirt looks like everything was made on purpose right from the beginning. But be very observant on wich gore is made upside down and not. So that they will lay/come every second

That is the secret
